Sir:-
With reference to my despatch No. 313 of the 23rd July I have the honour to transmit herewith a report, which I have received from His Majesty's Consul General at Canton on the piratical attack made on the British steamship "Sainam", together with copies of the depositions taken by him at an enquiry held on board the vessel.
I repeated your telegram No. 134 of July 23rd to His Majesty's Consul General and asked him to verify or supplement the information contained in it respecting the family of the murdered missionary. He furnished me in reply with the particulars respecting Mr. MacDonald's income and relatives, which I communicated to you in my telegram No. 143 of July 27th, and stated that no claims for compensation had been filed or presented.
Right Honourable
Sir Edward Grey, Bart., M.P.
